HEALTHCARE EYEWITNESS-12 dec 08 by
TASIM ZAHID in one of srinagar dailies;

Srinagar, Dec 11: It was Monday noon when a wounded man, in late 30s was rushed to the SMHS hospital. Irshad Ahmed Khan of Chanapora had met an accident.
As the doctors examined him they called for his urgent surgery, diagnosing internal injury. The patient was declared critical.
The doctors asked for his immediate CT -Scan but the attendants were taken by surprise when they were told that the vital test couldn’t be done at the hospital.
The doctors told them they would have to take the patient to some private diagnostic center for the scan.
To the misery of the attendants there wasn’t any ambulance available to carry the patient out for the tests.
The patient’s condition was worsening and his body turning pail as the family waited for ambulance to arrive.
At around 2:30 PM the ambulance arrived and they rushed the patient for the scan under the supervision of two doctors.
During scan his condition turned so bleak that the doctors had to call for blood transfusion.
Given the condition of the patient the attendants had already arranged one B +ve from the hospital.
But the blood couldn’t be transfused as the doctors felt that its “temperature wasn’t optimum”.
Somehow luck favored and the patient was still breathing when he was brought out of the CT-Scan clinic.
Now there was another trouble as the ambulance had left the place.
The diagnostic centre also refused to provide them the ambulance saying the ambulance wasn’t free.
Helpless, the attendants managed hiring a Taxi and the patient was made to sit for the uncomfortable journey.
At hospital, the patient was straight rushed to the operation theatre. Hope of his survival was bleak as doctors after going through the scan reports said three of his organs were damaged.
The family was asked fill the requisite forms.
Besides, the family was asked to arrange three more pints of blood, which the bank refused to give pleading, “we’ve already given one.”
The attendants were told they could take more of the lot only if they donated equal amount for the bank.
But the B (+ve) lot had to be collected from a blood bank at Rainawari.
The family donated the blood and rushed to the Shahr-e-Khaas bank for the collection. At Rainawari, the family was asked to go back to the SMHS bank for the collections saying that “there had been a confusion between the two banks”.
Finally at SMHS, the blood pints were allotted.
Luckily the operation was successful and the patient survived but his spleen had to be removed.
Experts say after such a major surgery the patient should have been under intensive care. But the patient was kept in a “routine ward
ful.
